الغريب في الأمر وبعد التحليل تبين أن عمر هذه الفوهة 66 مليون عام. وهذا نفس تأريخ انقراض نصف أشكال الحياة في العصر الطباشيري ومن ضمنها الديناصورات.
وبعد إجراء العديد من الدراسات؛ تم تأكيد ان هذه الفوهة هي أثر لنيزك قد ضرب الأرض وحدث أكبر تسونامي بتأريخ الأرض. ثم تم حجب الشمس بسبب الرماد والغبار المتطاير لعدة أعوام مما أدى الى انقراض نصف الكائنات الحية الموجودة آنذاك.
